Description
The Baland Mosque — literally "high mosque" — takes its name from the tall stone platform it stands on. Plain outside, it is astonishing within: a flat wooden ceiling covered in gilded arabesque painting, a tiled mihrab and carved panels that count among the finest applied art in Bukhara. It served as the Friday mosque of its quarter from the early 16th century. The quiet courtyard with its old wooden platforms keeps an authentic neighbourhood feel.
