Description
Magoki-Attori, the "pit mosque of the perfume sellers", is among the oldest mosques in Bukhara — rising cultural layers have left it four to five metres below today's street level. Its southern portal, from the 12th century, is a rare masterpiece of Karakhanid carved brickwork. The mosque is believed to stand on the site of a Zoroastrian temple, and tradition holds that in early times Jews and Muslims prayed here at different hours. The interior now hosts an exhibition on the history of Central Asian carpets.
