Description
Rebuilt in its present form in 1514 under the Shaybanid dynasty, the Kalon Friday Mosque can hold close to ten thousand worshippers at once. Its vast courtyard is framed by arcades carrying 288 small domes, while the great blue dome above the mihrab is visible from far across the city. In Transoxiana only the Bibi-Khanym Mosque of Samarkand exceeded it in size. Generations of students once studied in the shade of the old mulberry tree at the centre of the court.
