Description
Commissioned by the Karakhanid ruler Arslan Khan and completed by the master builder Bako in 1127, the Kalyan Minaret rises 46 metres above the old town. For nearly nine centuries it has served as a call-to-prayer tower, a beacon for desert caravans and a watchtower in wartime. Legend holds that even Genghis Khan, who levelled the city, ordered it spared. Its shaft is wrapped in fourteen ornamental bands of fired brick, no two patterns alike.
