Description
Lyabi-Hauz is the social centre of old Bukhara: a pond excavated in 1620 on the orders of vizier Nadir Divan-Begi, ringed by a madrasah, a khanaka and mulberry trees that are centuries old. By day people come for the shade; by night the square fills with diners, music and strolling families. On the bank stands the cheerful bronze of Khoja Nasreddin, the folk trickster, astride his donkey. The surrounding teahouses and restaurants stay open late into the evening.
