Description
The Kukeldash Madrasah was founded in 1568-1569 by Qulbaba Kukeldash, a powerful emir at the court of Abdullah Khan II, and with 160 hujras it is the largest madrasah in Bukhara. Its two-storey arcades, carved gates and star-vaulted ceilings represent mature 16th-century Bukharan architecture. The celebrated writer Sadriddin Ayni studied within these walls. The building closes the northern side of the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble.
