Description
Commissioned in 1417 by Ulugh Beg, the astronomer-king, this is the oldest madrasah still standing in Central Asia. Carved over its door is the hadith "The pursuit of knowledge is the duty of every Muslim man and woman" — a fitting motto for its founder. The compact courtyard, two tiers of student cells and star-patterned tilework reflect an almost astronomical precision. Facing it stands the Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah, built two centuries later; together they form Bukhara's famous kosh, or paired, ensemble.
