Description
Erected for the Samanid dynasty at the turn of the 10th century, this mausoleum is the oldest fully preserved brick monument in Central Asia. The perfectly cubic structure is decorated with nothing but fired brick, laid in eighteen distinct patterns that shift in appearance as the sun moves through the day. Buried under drifting sand for centuries, it escaped destruction during the Mongol invasion. The building uniquely blends Zoroastrian and early Islamic architectural motifs.
